This course equips Massachusetts PreK–12 world language educators with the instructional practices, assessment tools, and curriculum knowledge to shift from grammar-based to proficiency-based instruction aligned to the Massachusetts 2021 World Languages Curriculum Framework and ACTFL standards.

  1. Apply the Massachusetts 2021 World Languages Curriculum Framework and ACTFL proficiency guidelines to curriculum planning and lesson design.
  2. Design communicative tasks and performance assessments that target interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication.
  3. Use ACTFL Can-Do Statements to set proficiency targets, assess student progress, and differentiate instruction.
  4. Integrate culturally sustaining practices and authentic materials into world language instruction for diverse learners.
  5. Develop a standards-aligned unit of instruction that demonstrates the shift from grammar-based to proficiency-based teaching.
